In This Part :
The atom
• It is the fundamental building unit of matter.
The New Zealand scientist Rutherford discovered that the nucleus of the atom contains positively charged protons

the atom consists of :
Nucleus. Electrons.
1. Nucleus
[ Location ] It is the central core of the atom.

[ Charge ] It is positively charged, because it contains:
• Protons : positively (+ve) (+1) charged particles.
• Neutrons : electrically neutral (±ve) (0) particles

[ Mass ] The mass of the atom is concentrated in the nucleus. (G.R)
because the electron has a negligible mass relative to that of the proton or neutron.

[ Mass ] The nucleus is positively charged. (G.R)
Because it contains
• Protons : Positively charged particles (+ve)
• Neutrons : Electrically neutral particles (uncharged) (±ve)

2. Electrons
[ Location ] They orbit (revolve around) the nucleus at very high speed.
[ Charge ] They are negatively (-ve) (-1) charged particles.
[ Mass ] The electron has a negligible mass relative to that of the proton or neutron.
[ Number ] The number of negative electrons which revolve around the nucleus is equal to
the number of positive protons in the nucleus, so the atom is electrically neutral in its ordinary state.
