Chapter 8: Nutritional Assessment
Nutritional assessment is the interpretation of anthropometric (comparative study of human
body measurements), biochemical (laboratory), clinical, and dietary data to determine whether
a person or groups of people are well nourished or malnourished (over-nourished or undernourished).
This can be referred to as the ABCD method:
A. Anthropometry
B. Biochemical/biophysical methods

Course Description
This 35-hour course primarily focuses on the current health problems affecting children & adolescents in Egypt. It will highlight the impact of various common health problems at the early stages of the life cycle & their functional outcomes in terms of morbidity, mortality, growth, & development. Students will become familiar with the different predisposing factors for childhood & adolescent morbidity. Moreover, they will be exposed to programs & strategies available to combat health & nutritional problems.
Core Knowledge
By the end of this course the students should be able to:
•• Recognize typical growth & developmental stages in children & adolescents
•• Identify morbidities & mortalities that affect children & adolescents
•• Describe the main factors that influence morbidity & mortality in childhood & adolescence
•• Discuss the components of health programs for children & adolescents
•• Know the compulsory vaccines of childhood
•• Explain the optimal nutrition for children & adolescents & describe their impact on health & wellbeing
•• Explain assessment methods of nutritional status
•• Categorize problems of malnutrition
•• Explain the significance of breastfeeding
•• Be aware of the definition of exclusive breastfeeding & identify steps for successful breastfeeding
•• Discuss challenges to breastfeeding practices
•• Illustrate appropriate & balanced diet for different age groups
•• Identify measures for ensuring food safety
