Objectives
• Provide an overview Enterobacteriaceae
• Define key and concepts of EnterobacteriaceaeCourse Description
This course will provide students the basic concepts of bacterial morphology, & induced diseases, especially endemic in the locality: their transmission, laboratory diagnosis, treatment. Also, to provide students with the essential knowledge of the interaction of viruses & fungi with host cells & molecular events during their replication. General topics include chemical & physical properties of both viruses, their classification, cultivation, laboratory diagnosis & prevention & control of infection
Core Knowledge
By the end of this course, students should be able to:
A1-Identify the principles of growing & cultivating microorganisms, the scientific basis of using antimicrobial agents, their mode of action, application & complications in vivo & in vitro.
A2-Identify & differentiate microorganisms of medical importance, their virulence, pathogenesis, their clinical diseases, diagnosis, treatment, prevention & control.
A3-Recognize general fungal morphology, cell structure, physiology, genetics, treatment, the inhibitory action of the antifungal chemotherapy & laboratory diagnosis.
A4-Student will learn the essential concepts of virology which include the structure of different viruses, properties.
Intellectual Skills
b1-Distinguish different laboratory procedures necessary to approach diagnosis of the common infectious clinical conditions with prioritization of the most appropriate & most cost-effective tests to be used.
B2- Able to correlate between different diseases & viruses or fungi associated with them to reach to final diagnosis.
B3- Able to select the suitable sample & the suitable laboratory test for diagnosis.
Professional &practical skills
c1-Demonstrate & perform simple, Gram & Zeihl- Neelsen stains of the most medically important bacteria & identify according to morphology & the characteristics of stained preparations.
c2-Demonstrate culture media (with & without growth), the different biochemical tests used to identify bacteria & diagnose infectious diseases & antibiograms used for choice of proper antibiotics.
c3-Practice different methods used for isolation of viruses & fungi & their identification.
c4-Practice molecular techniques used for viral & fungal detection
c5-Demonstrate different methods of sterilization, disinfection. General transferable skills
d.1- Able to deal with information technology.
d.2- Communicate effectively with all potential health care providers.
d.3- Collaborate with his colleagues in a teamwork inside the lab, as well as solving problems.
