The Mole
CHEMISTRY - Secondary 1
In This part we will study
Molar mass
The mass of one atom is called atomic mass, which is a very small amount, it is estimated in a unit known as atomic mass unit amu which can be shortened to u.
When the atomic mass of an element is estimated in grams, it is called the molar mass of atom , it is estimated in (g/mol) as shown in the examples illustrated in the following table :
The sum of gram atomic mass of the atoms that compose the molecule is known as gram molecular mass (g) , or the molar mass (g/mol).
Application : Calculate the molar mass of anhydrous copper sulphate CuSO4.5H2O
[Cu = 63.5, S = 32, O = 16, H = 1]
The mole of a diatomic molecule of an element contains 2 moles of atoms, as in the following table:
The molar masses of some molecules of some elements differ according to the physical state, due to the difference of their molecular structure.
Example (1) :
Juglone is a known dye, it has been used centuries ago, it is extracted from the nut hulls of black walnuts, it is also used as a natural herbicide as it inhibits certain plant species from growing around the black walnuts, calculate the molar mass of juglone.
