Audio is a data type and form of media which displays sounds within an information system. Audio can be collected by microphones or created and manipulated using software. Data which needs to be recorded in order to create an audio file includes:

- Sampling Rate: the number of times a sample (slice) is taken from the sound wave. CD audio has around 44,100 samples per second.

- Sample size (bit resolution): number of bits per sample. The most common sampling sizes are 8-bit sound and 16-bit sound. The more bits available, the more sounds available.

- Time: Duration of the Audio file.
