Text is a data type and form of media which displays simple characters and symbols within an information system.

Each individual standard text based character that is entered in to the system consumes 8 bits of data. The 8 bits (eight 0’s and 1’s) that make up a character are called a Byte. Text is stored as a Binary (0’s and 1’s) value, which is then recognised as a specific symbol based on the American Standard Code for Information Interchange (ASCII) or Unicode. E.g. The letter ‘A’ has the ASCII / Unicode value of 065, which 01000001 (8 bits!) in Binary. The current standard for storing characters is Unicode (UCS-2) which uses 16-bits and can consume up to 4 Bytes to represent all characters in all writing systems throughout the world in a single set.
