Keith Cooper looks at making fine art black and white prints with the Epson ET-8550 EcoTank printer. The printer supports paper sizes up to to 13" width.

Using the Epson ABW black and white print mode Keith shows the differences the 8550 ink set makes for monochrome printing with A3+ (13" x 19") prints on a cotton rag matte art paper and a normal photo paper.

The mixed ink set of the 8550 includes matte black and photo black inks, where the matte black is used at some print settings (VFA) to increase the depth and neutrality of blacks.

The mixed ink set means that more care than usual is required in paper selection for optimal results. There is a guide to using the Black and White printer test images which are available for free download on the Northlight Images web site:
